WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Building off a great outing on Sunday versus Palm Beach County rival Lynn University, right-hander Andrea Fugate decided she might as well take care of business versus another county foe on Tuesday evening as the senior tossed an impressive complete game victory over Northwood University in the home opener for PBA.
After allowing a run to Northwood in the third inning to break the scoreless tie, PBA responded with two runs in the third inning followed by three more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Fugate, a product of St. Petersburg Community College, limited the Seahawk hitters with only two hits an one earned run while striking out five batters.
On the offensive side, battery-mate Candace Horton (Orlando, Fla.) busted out of her early-season slump in a big way with a 2-3 performance at the plate while driving in four runs. Shortstop Caitlin Boucschet (Lake Worth, Fla.) posted a double-digit hits performance including a double as did right-fielder Heather Laird (Venice, Fla.).
Maryelise Gierke went to the pitching circle for Northwood for Tuesday’s 2008 opener for the Seahwaks and responded with a solid outing of six innings, however struggled due to a lack of defensive support from her teammates as the Hawks committed three errors which led to three unearned runs charged to the right-hander.
Tyler Cox contributed Northwood’s only run of the contest on a long homerun in the third inning.
