PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team opened play on Friday with two games at their own tournament, the Sailfish Showdown at the Lake Catherine Complex. The team fired off a 14-1 mercy-rule win over Merrimack (Mass.) College in their tournament opener and then dropped their first game of the 2014 season in extra innings by a 4-3 score to Saint Leo (Fla.) University in the night cap.

The ‘Fish (7-1) will take on the University of Charleston (1-1) on Saturday in their only tournament action of the day at 3 pm. Sunday will feature two more PBA games with an 11 am matchup with Flagler (Fla.) College and a 1 pm game slated against Goldey-Beacom College.

Game One (PBA vs. Merrimack College)

Their first game action in nearly 10 days saw the ‘Fish score in every inning while producing 16 total hits versus the Warriors (0-2) before the five inning mercy-rule ended the game.

After single runs in the first and second inning the Sailfish produced four runs in the third before putting together a three-spot in the fourth and five more scores in the fifth inning to close out their work at the plate.

Sophomore Amber Johnson (Win, 4-0) went the first three innings in the pitcher’s circle for PBA before handing the ball off to Aubree Murphy who totaled a solid two innings of relief. Amber Johnson produced six strikeouts while Murphy added in a pair of punchouts.

Sophomore Lindsey Johnson led the team’s hitting attack with a 3-for-4 game including a pair of runs batted in and two runs scored. She blasted her first homerun of the season off a palm tree beyond centerfield in the spacious Lake Catherine field.

Victoria Gonzalez connected for a pair of hits and two walks while Camille Benito also blasted her first round tripper with a long 2-run homer in the third inning. She would also add in a RBI single and another run-scoring hit in the fifth inning.

Chelsie Hersey gave PBA another multi-hit game with her 2-for-4 performance with a pair of runs scored while senior Mackenzie Johnson rounded out the team’s multi-hit performers with her 2-for-3 showing.

Game Two (PBA vs. Saint Leo University)

Juniors Kayti Lundin and Ashley Ehlers squared off in the nightcap in front of a nice size crowd gathered at the Lake Catherine complex.

The Sailfish jumped in front 2-0 with a pair of runs in the second inning as sophomore Theresa Butler lined a triple into the right-centerfield gap to plate both Shelby Wood and pinch-runner Torie Weems.

Saint Leo (8-7) would be held scoreless by Lundin until the top of the fourth inning when Cassie Boggs would line a run-scoring triple and then come home to score herself on a RBI single from Brittany Ewing to tie the score.

After seven innings were complete and the score was tied the two teams moved into the international tie-breaker that placed a runner on second-base to start the eighth inning.

Saint Leo would score two runs in the frame thanks to a pair of PBA errors that made for a tough 4-2 deficit by the ‘Fish heading to the bottom of the eighth.

They would get close on a Stephanie Garrels RBI double that plated pinch-runner Brianna Rano for a 4-3 Saint Leo lead as the Lions and head coach John Conway would then move to their bullpen.

Relieving Ehlers (Win, 2-0) was Alana Tabel (Save, 2) who retired the final PBA batter of the game on a groundout to secure the 4-3 win.

Amber Johnson (Loss, 4-1) would come on to toss the final 4.2 innings of work and tallied four strikeouts in the loss for PBA.

Saint Leo outhit Palm Beach Atlantic by a 6-5 margin with no player on either side able to register a multi-hit game.
