JUPITER, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic’s baseball squad dropped a tough contest to Florida Memorial University 9-8 on Tuesday night at the Roger Dean Complex.

The Sailfish took a 7-3 lead into the seventh inning, but the bullpen collapsed and surrendered six runs in the frame. Though PBA put up a valiant effort in their final three at-bats, the Lions escaped every jam and came away with the victory.

Freshman Tyler Scheuer came out of the bullpen with bases loaded in the 7th inning and worked his way out of the jam, then breezed by the Lions in the eighth in ninth innings, but the offense never could scratch across the tying run.

Palm Beach Atlantic was led at the plate by the junior duo of Chris Farrell and Jason Webb. Farrell finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Webb went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks.

The PBA defense turned in a Web Gem worthy play to end the fifth inning when second baseman Anthony Ortiz ranged to his right behind the second base bag, tossed the ball behind his back to shortstop Ryan Gerber covering the bag who then fired across the diamond for a double-play.

In the end, however, FMU outhit Palm Beach Atlantic 13-11 in the game and committed four errors, yet still came away with the victory.

PBA returns to action in a key south-region matchup on Friday night against Florida Tech. The first game of the three game series begins at 6 PM.
