Box Score

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Sailfish softball team continued their winning ways to start the 2014 season by posting consecutive shutout victories over Northwood (Fla.) University on Wednesday afternoon at the NU Alumni Field. The team broke a scoreless 0-0 tie thru five innings in game one with five runs over the final two innings and then cruised for a 9-0 win in game two.
The pair of victories ties the Sailfish best mark to start a season in their NCAA Division II era, tying the 6-0 record put together by the 2008 team.

Palm Beach Atlantic will have some time to rest up before their next contest when they will take on Merrimack College to open the Sailfish Showdown Tournament beginning on Friday, Feb. 21st at 3 pm. PBA will host seven other teams at the Lake Catherine Complex on Feb. 21-23 with the ‘Fish set to play five games over the three-day stretch.

Game One

The Sailfish (6-0) rode the strong pitching of Amber Johnson (Win, 3-0) in the opener while the ‘Fish rallied for three runs in the sixth thanks in big part to a Jen Hunter RBI single and a Lindsey Johnson 2-run double on their way to a 5-0 victory.

Amber Johnson and NU pitcher Laura Downs (Loss, 2-1) were each solid from the circle but it was Johnson who came away with the shutout as the Royal Palm Beach native allowed only three hits and a pair of walks over the course of seven innings while adding in four strikeouts.

The score remained 0-0 until the top of the sixth as Chelsie Hersey was hit-by-a-pitch followed by a stolen base from the speedy Sailfish outfielder. Leadoff hitter Stephanie Garrels then followed with a walk before a sacrifice bunt from Theresa Butler put two runners in scoring position with one out.

Hunter then came through with a single up the middle to plate one run followed by Lindsey Johnson’s double to right-centerfield to bring in two more.

Garrels added to the Sailfish lead an inning later with a RBI single to plate Hersey while another Lindsey Johnson double gave the ‘Fish their final run.

The Sailfish finished with eight hits in the win including two hits each from Garrels, Hunter and Lindsey Johnson. Johnson finished with three runs batted in.

Game Two

Following their strong hitting in game one the ‘Fish did not disappoint in game two as they came out with six runs in the first inning to put the game out of reach early.

The big frame included an RBI double by Hunter, a run-scoring single by Lindsey Johnson and a sacrifice fly by Butler. The hitting continued through the order in the first inning as Mackenzie Johnson delivered a 2-run double followed by a Kayla Knight RBI single that would eventually cap the PBA scoring in the opening frame.

After a scoreless second inning the ‘Fish added on in the third courtesy of a solo homerun from Mackenzie Johnson, her second of the early season and an RBI single from Hersey to make things 8-0.

PBA finished their scoring with Lindsey Johnson coming in to score in the fourth following a double and a NU error.

Kayti Lundin (Win, 3-0) earned the starting assignment in the pitcher’s circle and produced another solid outing. The Illinois native tossed the first three innings and did not allow a hit while striking out three batters. Sophomore Aubree Murphy came on in relief and went the final two innings while allowing only one hit and a pair of punchouts.

The Sailfish connected for 10 hits in the win with four players registering multi-hit games. Hersey and Lindsey Johnson each produced two hits and an RBI while Mackenzie Johnson finished 2-for-2 with three runs driven home and a pair of runs scored. Knight earned her first starting assignment of the season and responded with a 2-for-3 day including a triple.
