KISSIMMEE, Fla.- After a disappointing showing in their first game of the afternoon versus Gannon University, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team busted out of a recent team-wide batting slump with a 7-1 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan College in their second game of the afternoon.
Heather Laird (Venice, Fla.) went to the mound for the second time in the Rebel Spring Tournament and nearly followed up her shutout from yesterday with another today against KWC as the right-hander limited the Panthers to only three hits and one earned run over seven innings while compiling seven strikeouts.
The Sailfish got their bats going in the first inning when sophomore left-fielder Chelsea Gravini (Orlando, Fla.) sent a towering drive over the right-field fence for her first homerun of the season. A product of nearby Pine Castle Christian Academy, Gravini’s first homerun at any level was witnessed by a large group of family and friends in attendance at the Osceola County Softball Complex.
After holding onto a 2-1 lead entering the later innings, PBA added on five more runs in the decisive sixth inning which effectively put the game out of reach with the Panthers only having one more at-bat.
Leading the offensive charge was a two-run double from sophomore Candace Horton and a two-run single from third-baseman Dani Perrotti. Much like Gravini’s impressive performance, Horton and Perrotti came through with clutch hits while playing in their own backyard as both sophomore starters hail from the Orlando area.
Gravini and second-baseman Holly Elliott (Seminole, Fla.) each posted multi-hit performances as the duo led PBA’s 10-hit attack.
The Fish wrap up their Spring Break trip at the Rebel Spring Tournament on Thursday when they play at 9 am and 11 am. PBA currently sits at 13-15.
