KISSIMMEE, Fla. - In a battle of two top-notch pitchers, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team came out on the losing end of a 1-0 decision to St. Joseph’s University on Tuesday morning in the opener of the Rebel Spring Tournament.
Right-hander Ashley Jones (Jensen Beach, Fla.) threw perhaps her most dominant pitching performance of the season (5-4) as the sophomore tallied a season-high 14 strikeouts and held the Pumas scoreless for the first seven innings before surrendering the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn the tough-luck loss.
Jones was opposed by lefty Sara Somogyi who earned the win for St. Joseph’s as she used a dominant rise-ball throughout her eight inning of work and totaled 15 strikeouts while allowing only two hits.
With the game scoreless through seven innings, the game moved to international tie-breaker rules, allowing each team to begin their extra frame with a runner on second-base. After PBA was unable to plate a run in their half, the Pumas stepped to the plate.
Nicole Costello drove home the winning run with a line-drive down the left-field line as the Pumas escaped with a 1-0 win to open the tournament.
The only Sailfish hits came from the bats of Caitlin Bouschet (Lake Worth, Fla.) and senior Casey Gibson (Cape Coral, Fla.).
