No. 9-Ranked Rollins College Narrowly Defeats Palm Beach Atlantic

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s tennis team took to Gaines Park on Sunday afternoon as they welcomed in No. 9-ranked Rollins College for a battle against the No. 30-ranked Sailfish. After leading 2-1 following doubles the ‘Fish were defeated in a tight match throughout by the Tars as Rollins prevailed 6-3.

Junior Veena Vasquez played a big part in the team’s solid showing against the top-10 ranked Tars (1-0) as she earned a win alongside freshman Yoanna Peshev at No. 1-doubles by an 8-2 count while also prevailing 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1-singles versus No. 40-ranked Elissa DeCampli.

The team’s other win came at No. 2-doubles as Jessica Wharton and freshman Maja Jovic teamed up for an 8-3 victory.

The difference in the match came down to the middle-singles as Johanna Olsson and Emma Wookey both shook off first set defeats to earn wins at Nos. 3 and 4-singles respectively against the ‘Fish.

Ashley Loft also earned a three-set win at No. 5-singles over Jovic while Katie Wookey and Shannon Etten earned wins for RC at No. 2-singles (6-4, 6-4) and No. 6-singles (6-3, 6-2) against the likes of PBA’s Peshev and Liddy Robinson respectively.

The Sailfish will have another tough opponent up next when they will battle Lynn University on Tuesday, Feb. 11th at 5 pm in Boca Raton.
