CLEARWATER, Fla.- The Sailfish softball team continued their solid pace to start the 2014 campaign on Saturday afternoon by defeating Eckerd College by an 8-1 final score. The ‘Fish saw their game time pushed back a few hours due to wet weather conditions and then witnessed their second game of the day rained out all together as field conditions became unplayable for the team’s scheduled contest versus the University of Tampa.
The Sailfish will take on Colorado Christian University on Sunday at 10 am before battling Valdosta State University at 12:30 pm to wrap up the Eckerd College Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
One day after collecting 11 hits in their season opener versus Florida Southern the Sailfish once again saw their bats come alive on Saturday against the host-Tritons as they put together a 12-hit attack. Junior Stephanie Garrels and freshman Victoria Gonzalez accounted for much of the offensive explosion as each produced three hits while accounting for a combined five runs batted in.
The Sailfish (2-0) jumped in front with three runs in the first inning followed by two more in the third inning to put the game at a comfortable 5-0 margin. They would add another in the fourth inning and then after EC scored their only run in the top of the sixth the Sailfish would score two more runs for good measure in the bottom half of the inning.
Garrels got things started for PBA in the first inning when she singled, stole second-base and then came home to score a play later on a Theresa Butler RBI single.
Later in the inning Gonzalez cashed in a two-run single as Lindsey Johnson and Camille Benito came home to score to give the ‘Fish a 3-0 lead.
Butler began the rally in the third inning when she laced a leadoff triple and came in to plate the team’s fourth run on a Jen Hunter run-scoring single. Gonzalez continued her big day later in the frame by adding an RBI single up the middle that plated Lindsey Johnson for a 5-0 Sailfish lead.
Garrels added a run for the ‘Fish in the fourth courtesy of a double that plated Chelsie Hersey while an RBI triple from Garrels in the sixth inning added even further to the PBA lead. Hunter capped the scoring with an RBI groundout.
Limiting the Tritons (0-3) to only five hits and one run was a trio of PBA pitchers in Kayti Lundin (Win, 1-0), Amber Johnson and newcomer Aubree Murphy.
Lundin proved solid in her season debut by going the first 4.1 innings and allowing just four hits with no earned runs, walking two and striking out four batters. Johnson tossed the next 1.2 innings of relief while Murphy took on the last inning by giving the team a scoreless frame with a strikeout.
Erin Dixson (Loss, 0-2) allowed five earned runs in 2.1 innings for Eckerd before being relieved by Carolyn Griffin who went the final 3.2 innings inside the circle.
