PBA Softball Set to Begin Regular Season Action this Weekend in Clearwater

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Sailfish softball team will face five familiar opponents over the weekend as they will open the 2014 season by competing in the Eckerd College Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. Joining a host of other teams from around the country at the Eddie C. Moore Complex, the Sailfish will take on four opponents from the NCAA South Region while also matching up against Colorado Christian University.
The Sailfish, under the leadership of eighth-year head coach Kimmy Bloemers, will battle Florida Southern College in the their season opener on Fri., Feb. 7th at 7 pm before taking on Eckerd and the University of Tampa on Saturday. The ‘Fish and Tritons will hit the field at approximately 11 am on Saturday while PBA and the No. 13-ranked Tampa Spartans will square off at 1:30 pm.
Palm Beach Atlantic will round out play on Sunday by taking on Colorado Christian at 10 am followed by an early-season showdown with No. 6-ranked Valdosta State at 12:30 pm.
The ‘Fish competed against Eckerd, Tampa and Colorado Christian last season at the Eckerd Invitational and earned wins over CCU and UT while falling to Eckerd. Tampa was ranked No. 8 in the country last season when the Sailfish earned a 6-0 victory over the Spartans.
Overall the Sailfish were 7-3 last season against their 2014 Eckerd Invitational opponents.
The Sailfish boast seven returning position player starters from a season ago while bringing back two of their top pitchers as well. Depth should also be a major strength of this year’s squad as the team is now carrying a roster of 20 players for this weekend.
