NAPLES, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s tennis team began their 2014 campaign in dominating fashion on Sunday afternoon by defeating Ave Maria University in a 9-0 sweep. The No. 30-ranked Lady Sailfish saw some familiar faces joined by a small cast of newcomers as they look to continue their winning tradition into yet another season.

One of the new faces included New Zealand native Yoanna Peshev who teamed with veteran Veena Vasquez at No. 1-doubles to claim an 8-2 win for the ‘Fish. Another long-time contributor to the PBA success has been senior Jessica Wharton who partnered with freshman Maja Jovic at No. 2-doubles for an 8-0 sweep.

Continuing that dominance trend was Vilja Vahatalo and Liddy Robinson at No. 3-doubles as they also put together a solid effort with an 8-0 sweep of their opponents.

Peshev got the team off to a solid start in singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the top followed by Wharton (6-4, 6-4) and Jovi (6-0, 6-1) putting up similar results at No. 2 and No. 3-singles respectively.

Robinson chipped in at No. 4-singles with a straight sets victory while Maria Jimenez and freshman Samantha Grim rounded out the Sailfish efforts in the final two singles spots. Jimenez earned a 6-2, 6-2 win while Grim won in straight sets at No. 6-singles.

The Sailfish will be in action on Friday, Feb. 7th at home when they will welcome Florida Tech in for a 3 pm match.
