Balanced Scoring Attack Leads Sailfish to 97-77 Win Over Florida National

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Sailfish men’s basketball team got back to their winning ways on Tuesday evening with a 97-77 victory over Florida National University to earn their eighth victory of the season. Five Palm Beach Atlantic players reached double-figures on the night including a career-high 20 points from junior Garet Tucker as the ‘Fish pushed past the first-year Conquistadors program.

After a sluggish start to the contest that saw the Conquistadors (8-19) grab an early lead the Sailfish (8-12) quickly got things in gear and never looked back.

A 3-pointer from senior Christian Martinez at the 12:20 mark of the first-half put the Sailfish on top 12-10 and they never looked. They would build their first-half lead to as many as 14 points as they cruised into halftime leading 38-24.

PBA was paced by eight points from Tucker on 3-of-5 shooting in the opening half as the ‘Fish knocked down 45.5-percent (15-33) of their field-goal opportunities while going 6-of-10 at the free-throw line.

FNU was limited to only seven field-goals in the opening period of play on 27 attempts for a 25.9-percent effort while also committing nine turnovers.

After a fairly routine first-half both teams kicked it up a notch in the second period as the Sailfish would go on to outpace the Conquistadors by a 59-53 second-half scoring margin.

The PBA lead would build to as many as 21 points with 5:06 to play on a layup underneath by Tucker and never dip below double-digits the rest of the way.

Head coach David Balza and his staff continue to use a deep bench as 10 players registered points for the ‘Fish while 11 players grabbed at least one rebound on Tuesday night.

Martinez and Marcus Hardy both put together solid efforts off the bench for the Sailfish as Martinez connected on 4-of-8 shots from beyond the arc and finished with 14 points while Hardy was strong with 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Junior point guard Evin Graham was solid as well with 13 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals in 28 minutes of work. Alan Hardy finished 4-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line for an efficient performance as the other-half of the Detroit, Mich. Hardy duo concluded the night with 11 points and seven boards.

Marko Djekovic and Stefan Dombrowsky were each solid contributors off the bench as well with eight points each while Djekovic dished out a game-high seven assists.

FNU was led by Ives Goedschalk with 23 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor and 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. Quantavis Hall added 20 points.

The Sailfish led the key categories of rebounds (52-33), second-chance points (25-10) and points in the paint (50-38).

PBA will take to the road on Saturday, Jan. 31st versus Eckerd College at 2 pm for their next contest.
