WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Sailfish men’s basketball team welcomed in Rollins College on Wednesday evening as the Sailfish and Tars did battle to complete a men’s and women’s basketball double-header at the Rubin  Arena. The Tars’ big front-line proved lethal from the outside as they knocked down 12 three-pointers in the contest and held on from multiple PBA comeback attempts to come away with a 77-65 victory.

Mitch Woods led four Rollins’ (8-8) starters in double-figures with 20 points while combo guard Alex Blessig put together an especially well-rounded effort with 18 points, eight assists and seven boards to go along with a pair of steals in 40 minutes.

The Tars jumped ahead early with an 11-2 run to start the contest and never let the lead dip below two points the rest of the night despite a multitude of attempts by the Sailfish.

After their early deficit Palm Beach Atlantic (7-12) trimmed the RC advantage down to 11-8 when a tip-in by junior Garet Tucker found the bottom of the net with 13:48 to go in the first-half.

The Tars would see their advantage increase back out to as many as 11 points before settling for a 40-30 lead into halftime. Rollins managed a 59.3-percent (16-27) first-half effort while knocking down three-pointers at a solid rate of 46.7-percent (7-15) while the Sailfish were limited to 44-percent (11-25) overall in the opening stanza.

The second-half began with a solid start by the ‘Fish as junior Ronnell Ross cut the lead to just seven points when he knocked down a triple in the opening possession of the second period. Another tip-in by Tucker a few minutes later got the Sailfish even closer as they trailed just 40-36 with 16:43 to go in the contest.

For seemingly every PBA punch came a counter-punch by the Tars as they rattled off an 8-0 run over the next minute and a half courtesy of a pair of 3-pointers from Woods and big-man Chris Uhle as well as a layup underneath from Jeff Dirkin.

With the ‘Fish loosing grasp on the momentum they once again had an answer as they themselves would put together a 10-0 spurt to cut the lead down to just two points at 53-51 with 9:26 remaining. Ross found a streaking Marko Djecovic for a fastbreak layup to get the home crowd on their feet.

Although the ‘Fish would hang tough it would be Rollins who would have the final run left in them as they used solid ball movement and use of the clock down the stretch to shorten the game and hold on for victory.

The Sailfish were successful on 10-of-24 second-half field goals (41.7-percent) while Rollins did a big part of their damage at the charity stripe by making 14-of-15 (93.3-percent) to close out the game.

Tucker led the Sailfish with 13 points on a solid 5-of-7 shooting from the field and 3-of-5 at the line. Evin Graham and Christian Martinez each finished with 11 points while Ross posted six points and seven boards.

Uhle just missed a double-double for the Tars with 13 points and nine rebounds while Dirkin rounded out their double-digit scorers with 11 points.

The Sailfish will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 28th at 7 pm for their next contest.
