WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. –– The preseason edition of the MCLA Coaches Poll has been released, with Palm Beach Atlantic garnering a No. 10 ranking to begin 2014. Today’s release of the preseason poll is the first time that fans have had an opportunity to see into the minds of the 29 coaches from around the country who vote in the poll.
The Sailfish are preparing for a national championship run in 2014.
The Sailfish, who finished 11-3 in 2013, received 335 votes toward the poll. The formula is simple; a team receiving a first-place vote receives 25 points, while teams receive points in decending order until the 25th vote (1 point). Whoever attains the most votes receives the No. 1 overall position, and for the preseason poll, it’s defending champion St. Thomas (22 first place votes). The Tommies have won four of the past five Division II championships, have are the proverbial favorite for a title in 2014.
Also appearing in the top ten were: No. 2 St. John’s, No. 3 Grove City, No. 4 Grand Valley State, No. 5 U.S. Coast Guard, No. 6 Concordia, No. 7 North Dakota State, No. 8 Indiana Tech, and No. 9 SCAD. Fellow SELC teams Elon (No. 12), Florida Gulf Coast (No. 13), and St. Andrew's (No. 20) also made the poll. You can find the full poll here.
The next poll is the Week 1 poll; it will be released on February 25.
