MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- A terrific first-half by the Palm Beach Atlantic men’s basketball team on Wednesday evening at Barry University could not be duplicated in the second period as the No. 25-ranked Buccaneers pulled away late for a 78-69 win. The ‘Fish connected on nearly 56-percent of their first-half shot opportunities before stumbling in the final 20 minutes for a 30-percent shooting performance.
The Sailfish (5-10) solid first-half effort led them to a 41-35 lead over the Bucs (10-1) as juniors Evin Graham and Garet Tucker each poured in 10 points apiece to pace the six point halftime lead.
The ‘Fish connected on a strong 55.6-percent (15-27) in the first-half while BU was also solid with 46.7-percent (14-30) showing in the opening period.
Unfortunately the recipe for success for Barry all season has been balanced scoring as they entered the night with five players averaging double-figures and that balance kicked in during the second-half.
BU knocked down only 30.8-percent of their second-half opportunities but their work on the offensive glass is what eventually led the Bucs to victory. Barry grabbed 21 offensive rebounds which led to 19 second-chance points to make the difference in the contest.
Graham was once again superb with his all-around game as he put together another double-double performance of 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead four PBA players in double-digits. Tucker added 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting while Clayton Williams and Alan Hardy each chipped in 10 points.
Dedric Hill, a 5’9” transfer guard from Florida International University led all scorers as the BU guard finished 6-of-11 from the field for 18 points while Juan Ferrales, another FIU transfer, added 17 points. Yunio Barrueta and Savad Garner each went for double-digits as well with 16 and 10 points respectively.
Neither team found much success from beyond the arc as both squads knocked down 5-of-20 attempts from long range for 25-percent.
The Sailfish will host Nova Southeastern University on Saturday, Jan. 11th at 4 pm for their next contest as they ‘Fish welcome in the Sharks for a men’s and women’s basketball double-header at the Rubin Arena. The women will tipoff at 2 pm.
