TIFFIN, Ohio- With two exciting wins under their belt last week the Sailfish men’s basketball team will look to continue their winning ways during the second-half of the season. One of the big reasons for both wins last week was the exceptional play of senior guard Christian Martinez who was named the Independent Collegiate Athletic Association (ICAA) Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5.

The ICAA for men’s basketball includes NCAA Division II Independents such as PBA, Bluefield State University, Oakland City University, Spring Hill College, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Union University and Washington Adventist University. The award is picked each week by ICAA Director, Mike Bond.

A senior guard from Miami, Fla. Martinez averaged 17 points and shot 53.3-percent from beyond the arc in two games last week against Johnson & Wales University and Lynn University. He connected for a season-high 22 points in the four overtime win over JWU on Dec. 31st while knocking down four 3-pointers and going 8-of-9 from the line. He was especially instrumental in the ‘Fish finally pulling away for victory in the fourth overtime with eight key points in the period.

He followed that up with a team-best 12 points on four treys in the Jan. 4th win on the road at Lynn University as PBA knocked off their Palm Beach County rivals by a 56-53 score.

This is the second time a PBA men’s basketball player has earned the ICAA weekly honor this season after Evin Graham earned the award in December.
