Sailfish Open Up 2014 With 66-54 Victory Over Hardrockers

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic opened up the 2014 portion of this season’s campaign with a solid 66-54 victory over South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on Thursday evening in the Rubin Arena.
PBA got off to a fast start, building a lead that swelled to as much as 15 points in the first half. When the halftime buzzer sounded, the Sailfish were leading the Hardrockers by nine. Senior Kasie Parker and sophomore Kristie Mason both netted nine points at the break, and would play a crucial role in the second half.
SDM came back in the second half with a vengeance, taking a one-point lead with 6:20 left in the contest. That’s when Parker, Mason and Jaz Green took over. Over the next four minutes, the Sailfish trio accounted for 15 points and built PBA’s lead to 12, which would end up being the final difference in the game.
Parker and Mason led the way for Palm Beach Atlantic on Thursday, each scoring 19 points. Mason connected on three long-range shots while also blocking two shots and finishing with two steals. Parker had a solid all-around game, adding six rebounds, five assists and four steals to her point total. Green finished the game with another double-double, this of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
As a team the Sailfish forced the Hardrockers into 22 turnovers while only committing 11 themselves. The difference came from the free-throw line, as PBA shot 79% (19-for-24) and SDM shot just 39% (5-for-13).
Palm Beach Atlantic returns to action on Saturday afternoon, taking on Palm Beach County rival Lynn University in Boca Raton, starting at 2 P.M.
