KISSIMMEE, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s soccer team completed the improbable on Monday afternoon in their opening round contest at the NCCAA National Tournament by earning a 1-1 draw with Lee (Tenn.) University by cashing in on their only shot of the match. Sophomore Elizabeth Gonzalez netted the team’s goal in the 15th minute before holding off a perpetual Flames attack down the stretch to earn the draw.
The final shot count left the Flames (14-3-2) leading 27-1 over the Sailfish (8-6-2) but it was the final goals count that certainly carries the most weight.
The NCCAA National Tournament has moved to a pool play format this season whereas in year’s past the two teams would have gone to overtime and a potential penalty kicks shootout to determine a winner.
Palm Beach Atlantic will now turn their focus to No. 6-seed Dallas Baptist University who they will square off against on Tuesday at 2 pm.
Gonzalez cashed in on her team’s only shot of the day at the 14:53 mark of the first-half when delivered an unassisted strike for a 1-0 lead for PBA.
The advantage would hold up until the 64th minute when Lee delivered an equalizer as Ode Fulutudilu found Leah Fortune for her 13th goal of the season and a 1-1 tie.
Things would remain tied through the end of regulation as the PBA defense led by senior goalkeeper Allison Fox would hold the Flames scoreless down the stretch. Despite being away from game action for nearly a month, the Sailfish were well conditioned as a total of six field players played all 90 minutes in the match.
