WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s basketball team gave a scare to No. 25 Rollins College in the opening game of the 2013 Rollins College Classic on Friday afternoon, falling 67-56 in the Warden Arena on the afternoon, but keeping it much closer than the final score indicated.
After trailing by just three at the half, the Sailfish came out with ferocity in the second stanza. Thanks to the sharp shooting of sophomore Kristie Mason and efforts of Ayanna Holmes, PBA took a 44-41 lead with 12:41 left in the game. The Tars would prove resilient, however, coming back and tying the score at 47 with just over 10 minutes left in the contest.
The next nine minutes belonged to Rollins, who rolled out a 16-to-4 run, and distanced themselves to the final 11-point differential.
Newcomer Jaz Green paced the Sailfish in scoring with 17 points on the afternoon, while also grabbing six rebounds. Mason finished with 14 total points, including a 4-for-10 showing from behind the three-point arc. Senior Kasie Parker also added 12 points, with 4-of-4 shooting from the free throw line. Freshman Ayanna Holmes finished with five points, but led the team with a career-best 11 rebounds.
Palm Beach Atlantic shot 28% (19-for-67) from the field, including 31% (5-for-16) from behind the arc. Rollins shot 42% (28-for-67), but just 20% (3-for-15) from the three-point line. The battle of the boards went the way of the Tars, who pulled down an eye-popping 53 rebounds compared to the Sailfish 39. PBA forced Rollins into 18 turnovers while committing just 14 of their own.
The Sailfish return to action on day two of the Rollins College Classic on Saturday, taking on South Region foe Florida Tech at 2:00 PM. PBA returns home to the Rubin Arena on Wednesday, November 20th.
