SAINT LEO, Fla.- The Sailfish women’s basketball team matched up against two very tough exhibition opponents during the preseason and showed Palm Beach Atlantic fans a reason to be optimistic about the upcoming season. Saturday afternoon unfortunately would be a tough day for the young Sailfish squad as they fell 83-53 to Saint Leo University on the road.
A very competitive first-half saw the Sailfish (0-1) fall behind early but a late scoring spurt had them trailing just 33-31 entering the break. Unfortunately the Lions (1-0) would be the better team in the second-half, outscoring the ‘Fish 50-22 after halftime as they cruised to the season-opening victory.
The first 10 minutes of play in the contest witnessed the Lions jumping out to a 22-11 lead as they appeared poised to run away early. But a quick turnaround by the PBA offense quickly saw them flip the lead in their direction as they managed a 14-2 run to take a 25-24 lead on a Kasie Parker jumper with 6:10 remaining in the first-half.
The two teams would battle back-and-forth over the final six minutes of the first period as a Chelsea Connelly 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining sealed a 33-31 halftime lead for the home team.
The second-half saw the Sailfish score on their first possession to knot things up at 33-33 when Kristie Mason deposited a layup however the scoring spurt would be short-lived.
Saint Leo rattled off the next 14 points as the tight ballgame turned into a comfortable Lions’ lead that would eventually stretch out to as many 30 points in the second-half. Down the stretch the young PBA ball club could not overcome the quick adjustments of the SLU squad.
Newcomer Jaz Green made a solid debut on Saturday to back up two encouraging performances from the senior transfer during the team’s exhibition contests versus Baylor University and Davenport University. Green finished with a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds including five on the offensive end.
She concluded her day 4-of-8 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free-throw line to lead PBA’s scoring efforts. Parker added in nine points as did fellow newcomer Alecha Gibbs who both were in the PBA starting lineup.
The Sailfish finished the contest with a 27.8-percent (15-54) shooting effort while Saint Leo managed a 48.5-percent (33-68) mark.
Saint Leo produced a balanced scoring attack with four players reaching double-figures including a game-high 17 points each from Chelsea Williams and Connelly while Chachi Guzman and Teresa Manigrasso added in 16 and 14 points respectively.
The Sailfish will hope to even their season record to 1-1 with their home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 12th at 7 pm. They will host Ave Maria (Fla.) University at the Rubin Arena.
