JACKSON, Tenn. – Palm Beach Atlantic battled through cool conditions and various injuries on Monday afternoon against Union University, and rallied to a 5-0 shutout over the Bulldogs thanks to the great play from Daniel Pena, Kenny Hogg, and Melo Matutu.
It was the visiting Sailfish who got on the board first, with Pena notching his first goal of the season on a double-assist from Matutu and Hogg. The first goal was just the beginning of an offensive display put on by the PBA trio.
Nearing the end of the first half, Hogg scored his 21st goal of the season off an assist from Pena. The blast from the top of the box gave the ‘Fish a 2-0 lead at the break.
Coming out of halftime, Palm Beach Atlantic put distance between themselves and Union with a goal from Matutu. The one-time blast came off a perfect feed from Kevin Ireland.
With some chippy play on both sides of the ball, the formations for both sides started to take a strange shape. The Sailfish were playing multiple players out of position, as were the Bulldogs, but the goals kept coming for PBA, as Hogg picked up his team-best 22nd goal in the 70th minute.
The final nail in the coffin came in the 81st minute when Ireland once again set up his teammate with a perfect assist, and this time it was Pena who drove home the goal.
Palm Beach Atlantic outshot Union 15-8 overall, and 8-1 in shots on goal. The defensive line of Andy Garcia, Chris Karafilov, James Kaim, and Brandon Langenberg were stellar as a unit, helping Austin Spagnola and Steven Bush to the shutout.
The regular season finale takes place this Saturday, with Lee University traveling to West Palm Beach to play at 2:00 PM.
