GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No. 21 Palm Beach Atlantic fell in a tough one on Saturday afternoon, tripping up against the University of Montevallo, 2-0, at the Jonesville Park Soccer Complex in Gainesville.
It was the second consecutive shutout for the Sailfish, who started the week as the NCAA Division II’s second-highest scoring offense.
The Falcons got on the board early in the first half, with the ninth minute goal coming from a well-constructed play from the midfield. PBA outshot UM 10-7 in the first half, but were unable to get anything past the stout Montevallo defense.
With the match hanging in the balance in the second half, Montevallo took advantage of a PBA foul in the box and converted on the penalty kick. The lead was enough from there, with the Sailfish taking four of their seven second-half shots in the final 10 minutes of the match, but failing to find the back of the net.
Sophomore keeper Austin Spagnola held his own in between the pipes again, notching seven saves in the losing effort. The Sailfish outshot the Falcons 17-13 for the match, but it was UM who held the edge in shots on goal, with a 9-6 tally. PBA mustered just one shot on goal in the second half.
Palm Beach Atlantic (7-3-1) has no time to sulk after the loss, with the University of Tampa coming to town Monday, October 28 for a makeup game. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM at Magic Jack Field.
