WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – It took a while to get going on Wednesday afternoon, but a second half scoring eruption of seven goals helped Palm Beach Atlantic down the Trinity Baptist College Eagles, 8-0 at Magic Jack Field.
The lone tally of the first half came off the foot of Melo Matutu, who notched his second goal of the season on an assist from Ben Vogeney. It was the start of a big game for the 6-foot-4 sophomore, who added two goals and another assist in the second half as well.
Some of the key players for PBA were given the first half to rest, but they came out on a mission in the second stanza. Leading scorer Kenny Hogg deposited two goals within the first seven minutes of the half, with Tyler Sanders, Cory Smith, and Hunter Durham picking up assists.
After the two Vogeney scores made it a 5-0 score, senior Evan Singlar notched his first goal of the season on an assist from Ben. Lucas Coutinho made it 7-0 with his sixth goal of the year a mere 45 seconds later.
The scoring wrapped up with a goal from senior James Kaim, his first of the season. In total, ten different players contributed a goal or assist in the contest, including two assists for Vogeney, Smith, and Sanders, and an assist apiece for Durham and graduate student Ryan Pereus.
The back line of Sanders, Durham, and freshman Neil Slooves helped contribute to the first Sailfish shutout of the season. Senior Steven Bush made three saves in goal, with a couple being of highlight-reel fashion. In total, PBA outshot TBC 24-7, and in the shots on goal category 14-3.
Palm Beach Atlantic is back in action Thursday afternoon at Magic Jack Field, taking on The College of the Bahamas at 3 PM.
