TAMPA, Fla.- The Sailfish women’s soccer team hit the road on Wednesday evening for a tough matchup against the No. 4-ranked team in the county in the University of Tampa. Although the final score may indicate a blowout it was a determined Palm Beach Atlantic effort that kept the score just 2-0 throughout most of the match. In the end however the Spartans would prove their worth as they completed a 5-0 shutout win over the Sailfish.
A goal just before the nine minute mark by Cici Gonzalez opened the scoring for Tampa (8-0) as she came away with her fifth goal of the season to put the Spartans up early.
Unfortunately for the ‘Fish a second goal for UT came to fruition in the 16th minute when Shannon Walisch delivered a shot that deflected off a PBA defender and into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Things would stand at a 2-0 deficit until the 77th minute which began a stretch of three scores by the Tampa line in a space of 13 minutes to close out the contest.
“We had some great early chances including one that went off the post just a minute into the game which could have changed the course of the matchup,” said coach James Kryger. “We fought the entire second-half which was great to see but with us pushing forward we got caught on a break and they took advantage.”
“Overall it was hard to lose by that much in the end but our team got much better today which was an important thing for us moving forward,” continued the Sailfish head coach.
The Spartans led the overall shot count at 19-8 in the match while PBA goalkeeper Allison Fox made six saves in goal.
Palm Beach Atlantic will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 1st when they host Florida Memorial University at 3:30 pm at Magic Jack Field.
