MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- After trailing 1-0 for most of the match the Sailfish women’s soccer team fell victim to some late Barry University pressure and were defeated on the road at Buccaneer Field by a final score of 4-0 on Friday evening. The loss suffered by Palm Beach Atlantic is their first of the season as they drop to 1-1-1 in three results.
The Bucs (3-0) peppered PBA’s backline with a number of first-half scoring chances but the resilient work of the Sailfish defense including a number of key saves by senior goalkeeper Allison Fox left the game scoreless through the first 25 minutes.
Barry would find the back of the net for what would be the game-winner when defender Katrina Molfetta found a gap up the middle and charged through in the 26th minute for the game’s first score.
PBA managed a few key corner kick opportunities in the first-half but solid positioning by the BU defense left the ‘Fish just short on a game-tying score.
Things would remain 1-0 in favor of the home-standing Bucs through halftime and well into the second-half until a trio of late scores blew open what was a strong effort by the PBA side.
The first score from BU in the second-half was on a heads up rebound goal from Lauren Manna in the 76th minute that appeared to take the air out of the Sailfish effort. The Bucs responded with a breakaway goal on the next possession as Natalie Diaz moved her team in front 3-0.
An end-line cross from Sara Karna found the foot of teammate Kayla Monge for the final scoring tally as BU added a fourth and final goal in the 89th minute.
Fox proved busy throughout the evening as the four-year starting goalkeeper collected 12 saves as Barry outshot Palm Beach Atlantic 28-7 on the evening.
The Sailfish will look to regroup as they will host Warner University on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 3:45 pm for the team’s home opener at Magic Jack Field.
