ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- After a scoreless first match on Friday and without a goal the first thirty minutes of Sunday’s showdown the Palm Beach Atlantic women’s soccer team may have understandably become somewhat frustrated. Things started to change however and in a hurry as the Sailfish unleashed four goals over the final 60 minutes of play on Sunday while shutting out Barton (N.C.) College for the team’s first win of the season.
The two-game swing through St. Augustine, Fla. for the Flagler Kick Off Classic proved to be a solid showing for the young PBA side, especially from the defense as they posted a 0-0 tie against Limestone (S.C.) College on Friday and another shutout over Barton on Sunday.
“Overall we were very happy to execute our game plan and we fought hard going forward as well as defensively,” said head coach James Kryger. “We stayed strong which is really great to see this early in the season.”
“Now we have to rest up and not let our guard down in preparing for a tough match next week,” concluded the Sailfish manager.
After 140 minutes of scoreless soccer to start the season the floodgates would open just past the 31st minute of Sunday’s contest when sophomore Kasey Wyer put home a rebound attempt to put the Fish in front 1-0.
Although they would put together seven shots in the first-half while limiting BC to just four shots they would have to settle for the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
The beginning of the second-half saw the Fish continue to push forward when freshman Karina White served a ball to the back of the net on a header in the 61st minute as Wyer delivered a long corner kick in front of the goalie box for the assist.
Another newcomer Lesslee Hernandez came through 15 minutes later as she lofted a long ball over the keeper into the net for an unassisted score in the 76th minute.
Just three minutes later the ‘Fish struck again as Kierstyn Harrington knocked home her first goal in the blue and white on a cross from Hernandez as PBA cruised to the 4-0 victory.
PBA managed a final lead of 16-10 in shots while senior keeper Allison Fox earned a second-straight shutout in goal with three saves.
The Sailfish will now turn their sights to Barry University who the team will battle on Friday, Sept. 13 in Miami Shores at 7 pm.
