TAMPA, Fla.- With nearly an entirely new roster due to the loss of several graduated runners from last season’s team the Palm Beach Atlantic women’s cross country team broke ground on a new campaign on Friday evening. The young squad would finish ninth in their first race of the season as they competed at the University of South Florida Invitational.
A total of 165 female runners would march through the USF Golf Course on Friday as the NCAA cross country season began with high hopes for many.
The University of Tampa claimed the team title on the women’s side with a total of 31 points. Saint Leo University (92 points), Embry-Riddle (97 points), Nova Southeastern (104 points) and Florida Tech (104 points) rounded out the top five. PBA finished with 258 points.
Under the direction of third-year coach Trish Butler, the Sailfish cross country team saw their six runners mostly stay bunched together as they ranged from 107-161 in the final standings.
Leading the way with a time of 20:57 was newcomer Lexi Fenton followed by another new face in Brianne Anderson with a time of 21:30.
The next three finishers for the Fish were neck and neck as Jessica Sexton (22:18), Ashley Bofinger (22:24) and Danielle Neal (22:31) all came across the finish line within 13 seconds of one another.
Rounding out the PBA roster was Anna Fidanza who completed the women’s 5,000 meter course in a time of 29:15.
The team will have a couple more weeks of training before stepping into their next competition which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 21st at the Jim Ryun Invitational.
