WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – It took extra time on Thursday afternoon at Magic Jack Field, but freshman Lucas Coutinho came through with his first career goal to give Palm Beach Atlantic a 3-2 overtime victory over Colorado Christian University in the 2013 season opener.
When the game seemed firmly in hands of Palm Beach Atlantic in the second half, the Cougars struck back. The visitors scored two goals in the final 11 minutes of regulation, forcing overtime on the muggy afternoon in South Florida. Coutinho’s game-winner came halfway through the extra time on an assist from Kenny Hogg, sending the PBA fans home happy.
The first half belonged to the Sailfish, with the home team dominating possession and taking a 1-0 lead into the break because of a Hogg goal. The senior forward picked up right where he left off his record-breaking 2012 season, scoring the lone first half goal in the 37th minute with an assist from Coutinho, and adding another tally early in the second half on a pass from Cameron Roberts.
Palm Beach Atlantic dominated the overall team categories, firing 37 overall shot compared to Colorado Christian’s three, and 15 shots on goal to CCU’s three. The Sailfish also took 14 corner kicks compared to the Cougars’ one.
The victory in the first contest of the season was extra sweet for Head Coach Jose Gomez. It was win number 100 in his nine year coaching career. There will be an article released Friday to celebrate the occasion.
With the first game of the season under its belt, Palm Beach Atlantic is set to take on NCAA No. 1 Lynn University on Tuesday afternoon at 3 P.M. in Boca Raton.
