NEW ORLEANS, La.- Preseason regional rankings for the NCAA Division II cross country season were released this past week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) with Palm Beach Atlantic slated sixth in the South Region women’s team rankings.
Under the leadership of third-year head coach Trish Butler the Sailfish will have many new faces set to compete on this year’s team after the graduation of many of their top runners from a season ago.
The Sailfish will begin their season with a trip to the University of South Florida for the USF Open on Friday, Sept. 6th.
All of the regional champions from the 2012 season have been selected as the preseason favorites in their respective regions to earn repeat titles this year.
In the South Region it’s the University of Tampa who is expected to once again claim high status amongst the nation’s best teams as they earned the No. 1 regional ranking.
Following the Spartans was another Sunshine State Conference member in Nova Southeastern University while Gulf South Conference member Alabama-Huntsville rounded out the top-three team rankings in the South.
Just ahead of PBA was Saint Leo University at No. 4 and the University of West Florida at No. 5.
Other institutions recognized in the top-10 of the South Region include the University of West Georgia (No. 6), Florida Southern College (No. 7), Delta State University (No. 8) and the University of North Alabama (No. 10) rounding things out.
The Sailfish finished sixth at last season’s NCAA Regional while seniors Faith Warren and Katherine Harvey were named to the USTFCCCA All-Region team. Warren would go on to finish 94th in the NCAA Division II National Championship in Joplin, Mo.
