SKILLMAN, N.J.- Academic excellence is an annual goal for the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s tennis program along with their on-court success achieved during head coach Chi Ly’s eight-season tenure leading the Sailfish. That reputation continued to hold true this past week as the team earned their eighth straight Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team honor.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA/CA JUCO eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2011 and spring 2012).
The five student-athletes for the Sailfish who earned the ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction all are repeat honorees with the same five players honored last season as well.
Trotter wrapped up a fine four-year playing career for PBA by earning her fourth straight ITA All-Academic Team distinction while Jimenez and Wharton are both three-time winners.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
The Fish finished 20-7 for their second consecutive 20-win season.
