GREENVILLE, S.C.- After sitting out his first season at Palm Beach Atlantic as a member of the men’s tennis program, Mark Heimberger burst onto the scene in 2013 to not only grab a firm hold of the top spot in singles and doubles but also by being named a member of the NCCAA All-American team. A Mexico City native, Heimberger showed why he is a building block with the program for years to come.
His status as the top player for head coach Chi Ly’s men’s tennis team at PBA should come as little surprise to those that know Heimberger the best. His drive and determination only strengthened after a year away from competitive tennis, Heimberger used the time to effectively mold his game for the next level.
Joining the likes of past PBA tennis greats such as Brock Newton, Paul Segodo, Krasimir Atanasov and Luke Bolanos, Heimberger appears to be the next to take the torch of accomplished standouts. His on-court accomplishments are backed up by his always-solid work in the classroom as he was named to the Provost’s List (3.5-3.99 grade-point average) for the spring semester.
After beginning the year with consecutive wins in singles versus Division I foe Bethune Cookman and nationally-ranked Florida Southern College, Heimberger and the Fish would hit a rough spell.
From there however the team rebounded thanks in large part to the work of Heimberger as he led a very young and inexperienced squad.
He would go on to win at No. 1-singles in seven straight matches as he closed out the season on a high note against top-notch competition.
The Sailfish finished 8-11 for the season.
