LAKELAND, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team saw their season end on Wednesday with a tough finish at the NCCAA Regional Tournament despite a very solid season for the program. The Sailfish collected a program-record for regular season wins in the NCAA era while three players were named to the NCCAA All-Region team. Joel Buchko was named the NCCAA South Region Player of the Year while Nic Kovacs and Sean Visconti were named to the All-Region team.
The Sailfish finished 28-23 for the season under second-year head coach Kent Bottenfield with all but one position player set to return in 2014. The team will see five members of its pitching staff depart due to graduation for a total of six seniors.
Buchko took home NCCAA South Region Player of the Year honors after hitting a team-best .367 in 49 games while posting 15 doubles, four homeruns and 32 runs driven in. The Lancaster, Pa. native also registered 61 total hits, scored 32 runs and posted 26 walks.
Kovacs earned a spot on the NCCAA All-Region team thanks to his good work on the mound. The Clermont, Fla. product and Lake Sumter Community College transfer took his game to a new level as a senior by posting a 7-5 record with a superb 1.98 earned-run average. The righty made 13 starts while posting eight complete games on his way to a 104.2 innings of work on the season.
A starter for nearly the entire season, freshman Sean Visconti leaves the Sailfish with a bright young star at shortstop. The Wilmette, Ill. native collected a team-best 64 hits for the season while adding in 35 runs scored, 27 runs batted in and a .366 batting average. The sure-handed middle-infielder also stole 11 bases.
