MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Sailfish offense exploded on Saturday night, as Palm Beach Atlantic traveled south to take on South Region rival Barry University in a make-up game from late April. PBA pounded out 20 hits en route to a 14-11 victory over the host Buccaneers at Feinbloom Field.
Eight of nine hitters had multi-hit games for the Sailfish in the contest, with Matt Perkowski, Anthony Ortiz, Brian Walker, and Andres Vazquez all notching three-hit performances. Karl Kapinos, Ryan Gerber and Sean Visconti each went 2-for-4, while Spencer Castro also had two hits and tacked on three RBI.
Barry had a slim lead after two innings of play, but an eight run third inning proved to be the difference in the game for PBA. The big blow was a bases-loaded double off the bat of Castro, which scored two runs and put the ‘Fish on top for good. Perkowski had two hits and two runs scored in the third inning alone.
The pitching staff used a committee of arms to bring home PBA’s 28th victory of the season. Freshman Matt Bell received his first victory of his collegiate career, while junior Matt Niedzwiecki picked up his fourth save of the season.
Palm Beach Atlantic knocked out 20 hits for the second time this season, with the first coming against St. Michaels’ College in March. Ironically enough, the Sailfish finished with seven walks in both contests as well.
Finishing the regular season with a record of 28-21, Palm Beach Atlantic now shifts its focus to the NCCAA South Regional tournament, which takes place May 7-10 in Lakeland, Florida, with a trip to the national tournament on the line.
