JUPITER, Fla. – Nic Kovacs was brilliant again on Friday night, twirling his way to his seventh complete game of the season with a 2-1 victory over Eckerd College from the Roger Dean Baseball Complex.
Kovacs (Win, 7-4) scattered seven base hits in the ballgame, with the lone run coming in the fourth inning. The senior walked one batter and struck out five along the way.
PBA got on the board first thanks to Joel Buchko’s third home run of the season. The catcher took the second pitch of the at-bat over the left field fence to give the Sailfish an early lead.
The winning run came across as a product of small ball in the sixth inning. Ryan Gerber led off the frame with a double to right field, and was then bunted to third by Sean Visconti. After an intentional walk to Buchko, A.J. Steimel drove home the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. The one-run lead was more than enough for Kovacs on this night.
With the victory, Palm Beach Atlantic ensures a winning record in the regular season, with two games left with Eckerd tomorrow afternoon, starting at 12 noon. The 2013 seniors (Nic Kovacs, Andres Lopez, Jonathan Kies, T.J. Harbuck, Alejandro De Moya, and Matt Perkowski) will be honored in between the double-header.
