VALDOSTA, Ga.- The Sailfish women’s tennis team needed a complete team effort on Saturday to slide past Shorter (Ga.) University as they claimed the NCCAA South Region Championship on the campus of Valdosta State University. PBA took on Shorter in a neutral site contest to settle who was the top team in the NCCAA South Region and came away with a 5-4 victory.
The Sailfish (16-6) and the Hawks (13-7) needed the full allotment of sets to decide a winner on Saturday with the match coming down to the final result of No. 4-singles as Vilja Vahatalo came away with a 6-4, 6-2 victory to clinch the win for the Blue and White.
Palm Beach Atlantic earned victories in two of their three sets in doubles action to jump ahead early.
Veena Vasquez and Victoria Baca claimed an 8-1 win at No. 1-doubles while Vahatalo was joined by junior Jessica Wharton as winners at No. 3-singles.
Vasquez jumped on top of a No. 1-singles win with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over her counterpart while senior Natalia Trotter also claimed a singles win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 3-singles.
