TAMPA, Fla. – Bobby Kissner and Joel Buchko powered Palm Beach Atlantic to victory over No. 2 Tampa on Friday night, pounding out nine runs on 10 hits against the Spartans’ ace en route to a 9-5 victory from the University of Tampa Baseball Field.
Kissner’s fourth home run of the season put PBA on the board in the second inning, tagging the Tampa starter with his first two earned runs of the season. The Sailfish would go on to add two more runs in the third and fourth innings, highlighted by Buchko’s second home run of the season, a solo shot, in the third.
When the game started to get close in the ninth inning, the defense stepped its game up to another level. A.J. Steimel made a diving catch in foul territory for the second out of the inning, and after a Spartan single, the tying run loomed on deck. With the game on the line, Andres Vazquez made a webgem-worthy catch in left center to end the game, and give Palm Beach Atlantic the victory.
Nic Kovacs (Win, 5-4) spun six and one-third innings on the mound for the ‘Fish, allowing just two hits through the first six innings of work. After running into some trouble in the seventh, Matt Niedzwiecki came on and finished off the game, going two and two-thirds to close out the victory.
Highlighting the ten-hit effort from Palm Beach Atlantic were 2-for-4 games from Buchko and Brian Walker. The Sailfish knocked out seven singles in the contest, with the two homeruns and an RBI double from Vazquez.
Palm Beach Atlantic has to turn it back around to face the Spartans again Saturday, starting at 11 A.M. from the University of Tampa.
