WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – In a nine inning contest that took just over two hours to complete, Palm Beach Atlantic fell to crosstown rival Northwood University on Tuesday afternoon, 3-1.
All of the scoring was done by the fourth inning, with PBA getting on the board first. Junior Ryan Gerber bunted home Matt Perkowski from second base, a feat rarely accomplished. The Sailfish would knock out eight hits in the game, but would never get on the scoreboard again.
The fateful fourth inning was the lone blip on an otherwise stellar start from freshman southpaw Phil DiLandro. The lefty went seven complete innings, allowing the three runs in the fourth (one earned) along the way, striking out five. Jonathan Kies made his relief debut this season and struck out the side in the eighth inning, needing just ten pitches to do so.
The Sailfish narrowly edged the Seahawks in the hits category, eight to seven. Six of the PBA hits game from the top third of the order. Gerber finished 3-for-4 with a double, Joel Buchko had two hits in four chances, and Sean Visconti tacked on a bunt single as well.
Palm Beach Atlantic has dropped three in a row and have a tough task ahead of them this weekend, traveling to Tampa to take on the always-challenging Spartans. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
