DAVIE, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic traveled to Nova Southeastern on Saturday needing to win both games to make a statement in the South Region, and unfortunately the Sharks held the Sailfish at bay both games, with a 6-2 final in game one, and a 7-1 tally in game two.
With Nic Kovacs on the mound in game one, the Sailfish jumped on the board early thanks to a Ryan Gerber double, sacrifice bunt, and an Andres Vazquez groundout. Unfortunately, the Sharks came right back to tie the score in the bottom of the first, and then took the lead with a three-run second.
PBA put another run on the board in the fourth inning, when Joel Buchko scampered home on a Bobby Kissner sacrifice fly. With the lead at just two runs, NSU came back to score two runs thanks to two bases-loaded hit batsman from Kovacs.
After the fifth inning, neither team scored again. Kovacs settled in nicely, striking out six batters while walking just one. The offense could not get hit their groove, and only mustered three hits from the fifth on.
Individually, Joel Buchko and Matt Perkowski each finished 2-for-4, with each knocking out a double and single.
The offensive struggles continued in the nightcap of the double header, with PBA only managing three hits in the contest against a trio of NSU pitchers.
Starter Andres Lopez gave up two home runs in the first four innings, but the Sailfish climbed right back into the game with Joel Buchko’s first home run of the season, which made the score 3-1.
However, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lopez loaded the bases and walked in a run before handing the ball off to the bullpen. With Stefano Bucciol on the hill, the Sharks blooped home all three baserunners with a double, and putting the final nail in the coffin.
Buchko finished the game 2-for-3 with a double to go along with his home run. The catcher went 4-for-7 with two doubles on the day.
