FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s tennis team went into Saturday’s road match at Nova Southeastern University knowing their match versus the Sharks would be a huge factor in both team’s hunt for the postseason. In an instant classic, the Sharks were able to withstand the Sailfish charge after PBA trailed 3-0 following doubles only to see NSU claim the 5-4 victory.

Pitting two of the South Region’s contenders against one another in a late-season showdown, the No. 21-ranked Sharks (No. 8 in the South Region) versus the No. 23-ranked Sailfish (No. 9 in the South Region) proved to be as close as the rankings might have suggested.

With not much practice time the past few days due to heavy rain in the area, PBA came out flat as NSU claimed all three of the doubles matchups.

No. 17-ranked Veena Vasquez helped lead PBA back with a No. 1-singles win as she defeated NSU’s Charlotte Cote by the scores of 6-3, 6-0.

Victoria Baca and Natalia Trotter, the two PBA seniors, followed suit with a 6-3, 6-2 win by Baca at No. 2-singles and a 6-3, 6-4 victory by Trotter at No. 3-singles.

Sophomore Vilja Vahatalo continued the solid run by PBA at No. 4-singles however a No. 6-singles loss by the Fish would set up the all-important match-decider at No. 5-singles.

The matchup featured PBA’s Jessica Wharton and Nova’s Luisa Pintado. In the end it would be Pintado who would have enough left in the tank as she propelled her team to victory with the 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win.

The Fish will wrap up their regular season slate with a home match on Tuesday, April 9 at the Oxbridge Academy Courts with a 4 pm start time versus Northwood University.
