LAKELAND, Fla. – It took 11 innings for Palm Beach Atlantic and Florida Southern to finally crown a winner on Friday night, and it was the host Mocs who snuck away with a 6-5 victory from Henley Field.
It came down to a fluke play in short right field for PBA that resulted in an error and the FSC victory. The Mocs’ baserunner scored all the way from first base on the play.
It was a classic pitchers’ duel throughout the night, with Nic Kovacs leading the way for Palm Beach Atlantic, and Clay Chapman toeing the rubber for Florida Southern. Neither squad put together a multi-run inning against any of the pitching on the night, with the two trading blows the entire way.
PBA got two hits apiece from Sean Visconti, Andres Vazquez, Brian Walker, and Ryan Gerber along the way, with Vazquez knocking his first home run of the season into the night in the tenth inning. It seemed like the momentum would carry the Sailfish to a victory, but the Mocs had other plans.
Visconti drove home two key runs for the Sailfish, while senior Ethan Perla returned from injury to go 1-for-1 with two walks and three runs scored before leaving with another injury midway through the game.
Even with the negative PBA outcome, the game was well-played on both sides. The two squads return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon, starting their twinbill at 1 P.M.
