LANTANA, Fla. – It was a classic pitcher’s duel on Friday night, and Palm Beach Atlantic’s Nic Kovacs rose to the occasion to lead the Sailfish to a key South Region victory against Florida Tech. The senior tossed a complete game over the Panthers, ensuring a 2-1 win at the Santaluces Baseball Complex.
Kovacs tossed his fourth complete game of the season, scattering seven hits while striking out five and walking none. The right hander forced 15 groundouts, benefitting from another strong showing from the Sailfish defense. The lone run to cross the plate for FIT was unearned.
With both aces on the mound, the Panthers struck first for an unearned run in the third. PBA came right back and got a bloop-single RBI from Joel Buchko to score Anthony Ortiz to tie it up.
The difference in the game came just an inning later, when back-to-back doubles by Matt Perkowski and A.J. Steimel plated the second PBA run. It was all Kovacs after that.
Florida Tech hurler Jayson Boyer took the tough luck loss, going 6 2/3 innings, striking out ten and walking just one.
Steimel and Buchko were the only ‘Fish with multi-hit games, with AJ going 2-for-3 and Joel going 2-for-4. They also owned the games’ only RBIs. The Sailfish finished with nine total hits and seven runners left on base.
Palm Beach Atlantic returns to action tomorrow against St. Michael’s, and a rematch with FIT. The first game is slated to start at 12:30 at Santaluces.
