WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Having defeated Florida Memorial University in their previous meeting earlier this season, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team was unfortunately unable to match that feat as they fell on Tuesday night at the hands of the Lions by a final score of 59-50 at the Rubin Arena.
Battling both turnovers and a deep Lions bench, the Fish never quite got in rhythm and while they put forth a number of offensive runs, they could never quite get over the hump and take a lead. Amassing 28 turnovers on the night, Palm Beach Atlantic allowed FMU to tally 29 points off of Sailfish turnovers for the game.
Sophomore Brooke Burgess (Palm City, Fla.) once again put forth a solid overall performance by putting up team-leading totals of 15 points and 16 rebounds. Averaging a double-double on the season, the Jensen Beach High School product continues to be the main focus of opposing coaches’ defensive schemes.
Also notching double-figures in the scorebook for PBA were sophomores Melissa Perez (Miami Lakes, Fla.) and Haley Adcock (Monroe, Ga.). Perez knocked down 5-of-10 shots from the field while also registering six rebounds and five assists to go along with her 13 points. Perez also committed a costly 11 turnovers.
Adcock matched Perez with 13 points on the evening as she continues to show signs of promise for head coach Robin Potera-Haskins and the Sailfish interior play. Successful on 5-of-8 shots from the field, Adcock also netted 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Alicia Morries and Venetia Ashley paved the way for the Lions victory with 13 points each while Keisha Alexander just missed out on a double-double with eight points and 10 boards. The Lions also won the battle on the boards by taking down 48 compared to that of 39 for the Fish.
With the victory Florida Memorial moves to 9-4 on the season while PBA sinks to 1-18.
PBA will look to right the ship in their next outing witch is scheduled for next Tuesday, January 15th when they play host to Flagler College at 7 pm.
