VALDOSTA, Ga.- While the final score may not have indicated a close game, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team gave #6-ranked Valdosta State University all they could handle in the first-half of Thursday night’s contest in Valdosta, Georgia. In the end however, the Blazers were able to pull away down the stretch and take their second game of the season against PBA by a score of 60-38.
In the opening minutes it appeared as if the Blazers would run away with the victory on their home court as they jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first six minutes of the contest. Down but not out, the young Sailfish squads quickly regrouped and were able to cut the Blazers advantage down to a 21-26 deficit entering halftime.
The first-half of play featured a Sailfish defensive effort that limited Valdosta to a 34.6% shooting percentage (9-26) but ironically they were unable to slow the Blazers down from beyond the arc as VSU connected on 7-of-14 of their shots from three in the opening half.
This unfortunately was a sign of things to come as the Blazers continued their torrid three-point shooting in the second half of play and ended the night with 14 trey’s in 26 attempts for an amazing 53.8% shooting percentage from beyond the arc.
The Fish used a balanced attack against the Blazers with a team-leading point total of 10 by sophomore center Haley Adcock. The Monroe, Georgia native also chipped in eight rebounds and two blocks as she continues to improve her all-around play in the post for the Fish.
Other performances of note for the blue and white included nine points and seven rebounds for sophomore Brooke Burgess (Palm City, Fla.) who currently leads the Sailfish in both categories for the season. Burgess also swatted two Blazers shots as well. Sophomore Ashley Adkins (Nacogdoches, Texas) also added in nine points while nailing three of her five shot attempts.
The Sailfish will continue their post-New Years road trip by taking on the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida on Saturday, January 5th with tipoff scheduled for 12:30 pm. The 12:30 start time is central standard time.
