Sailfish Achieve Program First; Knock off No. 17-Ranked Florida Southern

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- A busy stretch to start the season including a few narrow losses all came together on Friday afternoon for the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s tennis team at Gaines Park. For the first time in the team’s history they were able to defeat Florida Southern College with the No. 27-ranked Sailfish defeating the No. 17-ranked Moccasins in a tight battle by a 5-4 score.

The Sailfish (5-3) continue to see positive results from their doubles tandems while also showing solid improvement from up and down their lineup in singles..

After the Fish fell at No. 1-doubles, the No. 2-doubles tandem of Natalia Trotter and Leyla Taracena picked up the slack with a 9-7 win.

The Fish improved to 2-1 after doubles thanks to another close win at No. 3-doubles as Vilja Vahatalo and Jessica Wharton managed an 8-6 win of their own.

Moving on to singles, which was the team’s downfall just a few days earlier in a 6-3 loss at Lynn University, the Fish would respond and respond in a big way.

Veena Vasquez gave the Fish a huge victory atop singles with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 11-ranked Riutort at No. 1-singles while FSC fired back with wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 4.

PBA would not be denied however as Wharton and Leyla Taracena came through with wins at Nos. 4 and 5-singles.

Wharton managed a 6-5, 6-2 win while Taracena was just as solid with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

PBA will be back to the courts again on Saturday when they host Saint Leo University beginning at 1 pm.
