WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – With the women’s basketball season winding down, forward Ashley Dolberry has a lot going on. Not only is the senior biology major 19 points away from becoming the Palm Beach Atlantic all-time leading scorer, but Wednesday she was named to the Capital One Division II Academic All-America second-team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The 15-member team was released Wednesday morning. To be nominated for the award, student-athletes must be a starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of at least a 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Dolberry is averaging a team-best 15.3 points per game as well as 9.6 rebounds per game. The Plano, Texas native carries a 3.96 G.P.A. and will pursue dentistry school after graduation. Ashley was honored earlier in the season after becoming just the second player in PBA women’s basketball history to top the 1,000 point plateau.
Playing the majority of the schedule against tough Sunshine State Conference opponents, Dolberry was the only player from a Florida institution to receive Academic All-America honors. She was joined on the second team by five others.
Standing at 5-foot-10, she has played every position on the court during her four year career while accumulating 1,109 points and also grabbing 697 rebounds. Her rebound total is good for second in Palm Beach Atlantic history.
The senior becomes just the second Palm Beach Atlantic student-athlete in the NCAA era to be named to the Capital One Academic All-America team. Men's soccer player Kenny Hogg also received second-team honors for the 2012 season.
You can follow Dolberry’s trek for the all-time scoring record tonight on pbasailfish.com, as the Sailfish travel to Miami Shores to take on the Barry Buccaneers at 5:30 P.M.
