PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – It took a resilient Sailfish effort and a walk-off single from Ethan Perla to lift Palm Beach Atlantic over Ave Maria University, 4-3, on Monday night at Palm Beach Gardens High School.
After a Matt Perkowski double and heads-up baserunning that moved him to third, Perla knocked a one-out single into right-center field to bring home the victory for PBA.
After falling behind 3-0 early, the Sailfish battled their way back throughout the game. Joel Buchko and Ryan Drew drove home runs in the third inning to cut the lead to one, and Brian Walker, making his first start of the year, drove home the tying run with an infield single in the seventh.
T.J. Harbuck flirted with trouble for five innings in his first trip to the mound this season. Stefano Bucciol entered in relief and held a Gyrenes offense, who had pounded out eight hits to that point, to a single baserunner in three innings of work. Jimmy Kelly (Win, 1-0) worked the ninth inning and picked up his first victory of the season.
Offensively, only one batter had multiple hits (Walker, 2-for-3), and the Sailfish were out-hit for the fifth time in eight games this season. Perkowski finished with two runs scored, while Buchko tallied his fifth double of the season, and Perla notched his team-high ninth RBI.
PBA has a quick turnaround, heading to Miami Shores to take on Barry University Tuesday night at 6 P.M.
