ORLANDO, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s tennis team picked up an important victory on Sunday afternoon on a neutral court when the defeated No. 39-ranked (ITA) Flagler College at the Red Bug Courts in Orlando, Fla. The No. 27-ranked Sailfish would have no trouble sweeping their way through doubles over the Saints with just one singles match going three sets for a FC victory as PBA cruised 8-1.
The Fish (4-2) were coming off a tough 5-4 loss in their previous match to NCAA South Region foe Florida Tech on Friday and were looking to get back on a winning track.
The team wasted little time in putting the pressure on the Saints (0-2) as they rattled off three consecutive wins in doubles action by the scores of 8-5, 8-4 and 8-4.
Veena Vasquez and Victoria Baca continue to lead the team from the top as the dynamic duo earned an 8-5 win at No. 1-doubles while each performed well at the top two singles positions as well. Vasquez produced a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1-singles while Baca held off a late rally by her opponent for a 6-2, 7-6 (7) win at No. 2-singles.
Natalia Trotter, one of two PBA seniors along with Baca on this year’s PBA women’s tennis team, claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3-singles to give the Fish another win.
Jessica Wharton and Leyla Taracena rounded out the winning lineup with wins at No. 5-singles (6-2, 6-2) and No. 6-singles (6-1, 6-1) respectively.
After a busy stretch to start the 2013 campaign including six matches in the first 10 days of February, the Sailfish will have the next 10 days off before competing at Lynn University on Feb. 20 at 5 pm.
