MELBOURNE, Fla.- Matching up against an NCAA top-25 team in Florida Tech, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team nearly pulled off the upset on the road on Monday night before falling 62-60 at the hands of the Panthers.

Palm Beach Atlantic (1-13) and Florida Tech (6-1) went through a defensive battle in the first-half with both teams combining for only 37 points before intermission. The second period featured a stronger effort by the Sailfish as they outscored FIT by a score of 44-41 but couldn’t quite get over the hump against the Panthers.

Sophomores Brooke Burgess (Palm City, Fla./Jensen Beach HS) and Ashley Adkins (Nacogdoches, Texas) tied for the team-leading totals in points by registering 18 points apiece. The rest of the Fish combined for 22 points on the night.

Burgess just missed out on extending her “double-double” streak to nine games by tallying nine rebounds in the game. Adkins led the Sailfish defensive effort with a season-high seven steals. As a whole, the Fish struggled with turnovers as they posted 30 miscues in the loss to FIT.

PBA will return to the floor on Wednesday to play the first game of the scheduled double-header versus Eckerd College. The PBA men’s squad is scheduled to take on the Tritons at 5:00 pm with the women hitting the court at 3:00 pm.
