DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- The Sailfish men’s tennis team concluded a tough opening road trip to start the 2013 season on Sunday by falling 4-3 in their final match of the weekend. The Fish came painfully close to their first team victory before falling in the final singles match to the No. 23-ranked Mariners (NAIA).
The hard-fought match came down to No. 4-singles with the two teams knotted at 3-3 with an extra set being needed to decide a victor.
Freshman Michael Leonard was thrust into the spotlight early in his PBA career as he would eventually fall to CCG’s Malhar Mali by the final scores of 3-6, 6-3, 5-7.
The Sailfish (0-4) started the match in fine form as they earned wins at No. 2 and No. 3-doubles respectively.
Giuseppe Guarnieri teamed with Nicolas Coburn at No. 2-doubles for an 8-5 win while freshmen Asti Adams and Nicholas Battistini managed an 8-6 victory at No. 3-doubles.
The Mariners evened the match with a win at No. 1-singles but Guarnieri came back with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2-singles to keep things tight.
Michael Tsoi, another PBA freshman, claimed PBA’s final win of the day at No. 6-singles with a 7-6, 6-4 win.
