VALDOSTA, Ga. – A four run, two-out rally in the second inning propelled Palm Beach Atlantic (2-0) to a 7-2 victory over North Georgia(0-2) in the Comfort Suites Classic on Saturday night.
The Sailfish once again received great pitching, this time from Andres Lopez and Matt Niedzwiecki. Lopez pitched the first five, gave up three hits, two unearned runs, struck out six and walked five. Niedzwieki, being used in relief for the second time this weekend, went the final four innings, scattering four hits and one walk, while striking out three.
In the decisive second inning, Karl Kapinos led the inning off with a single. After two strikeouts, Spencer Castro and Anthony Ortiz both walked. After falling behind in the count 1-2, Ethan Perla lined a double down the left field line, emptying the bases. Ryan Gerber then drove him home with a single, giving PBA as much offense as they would need for the night.
The offensive firepower came from the bottom third of the order, Castro, Ortiz, and Perla, collecting six of the Sailfish eight hits. Ortiz was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Perla was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Designated hitter Ryan Drew also went 1-for-3 with a two-run double.
The Sailfish wrap up the Comfort Suites Classic tomorrow morning at 11 A.M., taking on South Florida rival Lynn University. The first home game of the season is on Tuesday, February 5th against Florida Memorial at Palm Beach Gardens High School.
