Sailfish Women Open Season with Loss to Division I Bethune Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- The Sailfish women’s tennis team kicked off their 2013 campaign with a bang on Friday afternoon by taking to the court against NCAA Division I, Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla. Although the Fish would prove competitive it would be the Eagles who would eventually prevail by taking the match by a 5-3 score.

The Sailfish (0-1) are beginning a busy three day stretch in Daytona by playing three matches in as many days to begin the season with a Saturday match with Florida State College of Jacksonville and a Sunday slate versus Coastal Georgia University.

The match on Friday began pleasantly with sophomore Veena Vasquez and junior Jessica Wharton teaming up for a No. 1-doubles win by a score of 8-5. The Fish fell behind 2-1 after losses at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Palm Beach Atlantic gained another win in singles with senior Natalia Trotter putting away a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 3-singles while Wharton claimed a 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 win at No. 5-singles.
